Witnessing the artistry and generosity behind a lifetime in clay. It was a  A day of inspiration, discovery, and crystalline beauty.

About Our Visit

The Blue Mountains Clay Collective’s visit to Peter Wilson’s Rosemont Studio in Kelso on Saturday, 22 November, proved to be far more than a ceramics demonstration — it was an intimate glimpse into the lifelong practice of one of the region’s most respected ceramic artists.

From the moment we arrived, the experience felt personal and deeply connected to place. Peter welcomed guests with morning tea beneath the spreading shade of a walnut tree beside his beautifully restored, heritage-listed home. It set the tone for a day grounded in hospitality, curiosity, and the quiet rhythms of studio life.

Inside the spacious studio—designed and built by Peter more than 40 years ago—participants were guided through the tools, materials, and methods that shape his distinctive practice. Peter’s demonstrations were a highlight: a fluid series of throws and turns as he created teapots, bowls, plates, and vases with practiced ease. His explanations were generous and clear, revealing the thinking behind his forms, surface treatments, and firing techniques.

A Special treat!

rare treat awaited the group: a kiln opening from his most recent crystalline glaze firing. As the door swung open, the studio filled with that unmistakable sense of anticipation—like Christmas morning. The gleaming results drew plenty of admiration, and no one left empty-handed. Many participants, myself included, couldn’t resist purchasing some of the freshly fired pieces.

The afternoon Q&A offered a relaxed, conversational space to ask about everything from clay bodies and glaze chemistry to firing schedules and the evolving challenges of a long-term studio practice. Peter’s openness and wealth of experience made the session a standout for both seasoned makers and newcomers to the craft.

A highly successful Group Event

Throughout the day, the sense of community was palpable. Makers, collectors, and clay enthusiasts from across the region mingled, compared notes, and shared their own stories. With a light lunch included and plenty of time to explore the surroundings, the event struck a perfect balance between learning, inspiration, and connection.

In all, the Blue Mountains Clay Collective Inc. delivered a memorable and enriching full-day experience—one that offered not just technical insight, but a deeper appreciation for the craft, dedication, and beauty behind Peter Wilson’s work.
